Chapter Thirteen

Once we’d told the girls goodbye, I walked to my car with Kat. “Okay, there’s something I need to tell you,” I said in a low tone. I slowed down my pace, since this story would be long.

“Uh-oh. Something else happened?”

I nodded.

“Oh man, I’m not sure I even want to know.” Kat paused. “Okay, hit me.”

“I almost got run down by a car today.”

“Say what?” Kat came to a stop.

“I thought all of this was too much information for the others, but I got a call today,” I said, launching into the sad tale. As we began to walk again, I described in lurid detail the series of events. This was punctuated by OMGs, cries of “He did not!” and a lot of gasps from Kat.

She clutched my elbow at the end. “I’m almost shaking, Hailey, and I wasn’t even there.”

“Yeah, I get that. There is not a word for the way I felt.” I let out a sigh as we neared the Jeep. “This is way too much. I have to figure out what the freaking heck is going on. I can’t take it anymore.”

It was a little after ten and dark but still a warm and pleasant night. A few dog walkers and family groups still lingered in the park.

“I feel you on that, girl. What can I do to help?” Kat asked. Then a determined look spread across her face. “Oh, I know what I’ll do! I’ll bet you anything I can get the scoop on Raven. One of my clients with the dogs is a teller at the bank.”

“Really? That would be awesome, because her and Scott? I thought that was super weird, although it happens, I suppose.” I leaned against the Jeep. “I want to talk to him, but somewhere other than his house. I want to hear what he thinks, and I think he’d tell me more if Laura’s not around with all of her opinions about how everything is fine.”

Both of us rolled our eyes.

“I get what you mean,” Kat said.

“You know how couples are,” I said. “A lot of times one of them will just go along, when by themselves, you figure, they’d have a lot to say.”

Kat screwed up her nose. “But if the house is out, and the office is a no-go, how exactly would that work?”

“Therein lies the problem,” I said with a frown.

That very sought-out office—I had to get in there. But the girls had just confirmed what my mother said: there was no getting in the place except for current clients.

Emphasis on the current.

“I have an idea,” I said.
